ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz said on Thursday that every “so-called” democratic government, no matter how weak, should complete its tenure.
“This is how democracy will be strengthened in the country,” she said while talking to reporters outside the Accountability Court hearing corruption cases against her family.
When asked to comment on the ongoing process of “VIP accountability”, the former premier’s daughter shot back that they are appearing in court despite her mother’s ill health and her father’s questionable disqualification, so how could this be termed ‘VIP accountability’.
VIP accountability is when the vehicle turns around halfway due to back pain [of the accused] while going to the court, she commented, in an indirect reference to former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.
Continuing her indirect tirade against the former army chief and president, she said others are protected in the hospital [after skipping courts] and then to ensure their safe exit, dharnas [protests] are orchestrated. “No court has summoned him for playing with the country’s Constitution and laws,” she regretted, adding that other people who are absconders — a reference to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan — are roaming free.
In response to another question whether ‘her’ government will issue red warrants for Musharraf, Maryam responded, “our government, our government?”. She said further that it’s better if she stays silent, adding that neither she or the journalist is that naive.
She also questioned the ‘hasty’ justice being meted out to Nawaz and his family.
The former premier’s daughter lamented that their complaints of injustice are taken as contempt of court and their talk of strengthening democracy is misconstrued as treason.
Maryam clarified that reports of differences within the Sharif family are only present on the media and have no significance even if someone has said something.
When asked, she said her brothers Hasan and Hussain — declared proclaimed offenders in the case due to their continuous non-appearance — will answer the accusations against them themselves.
Replying to a question, Maryam said she was handling the media for Nawaz when he was prime minister. “I did not have any media cell. I know well who is conducting this propaganda campaign,” she added.
Maryam also said the country is passing through a sensitive phase and God willing, it will get out of it unscathed.
Earlier, as the hearing began, Maryam reached the court after landing at Islamabad airport in a special plane from Lahore while her husband, MNA Capt (retd) Safdar, arrived at the Federal Judicial Complex before her.
Both are accused in the Avenfield properties reference.
While entering the court, Safdar also spoke briefly to the media.
When asked to comment why he and his wife arrive at the court separately, he said, “you should ask the security officials this, they have their own programme”.
“Even today 220 million people know Nawaz Sharif is being victimised,” he said further.
In response to a reporter’s question, he said he should not be compared to Imran Khan, who is a fake Kaptaan [captain] unlike him.
